A Kansas City Christmas Eve

The day before Christmas Eve, we drove down to Kansas City to see the Chiefs play. We ran out of gas on the interstate, but luckily, we were right at an exit, and were able to coast onto it, and get to the shoulder safely. Ben decided to walk to a gas station, and I was relieved to see him get picked up by a passing car just off the exit. He was back in about 10 minutes. I told the girls they could have a snack while we waited for him, and soon saw they'd eaten an entire bag of chips. I asked how they ate all those chips already, and in unison, Evie and Kiersten said, "we're stress eating". That was funny and surprising. It's not something Ben or I have ever said, so I wondered where they heard it. They said on a TV show. The gas station let Ben borrow their gas can so he didn't have to buy one, and we all went inside for $1 sandwiches. We got back on the road to KC (somehow without thinking to fill up the gas tank the rest of the way after having used the gas can). So about 40 minutes later, we discovered that we were about to run out of gas again! Luckily this time we noticed sooner, and found a gas station in time. Who knows where our heads were? It was very un-Ben like for all that to happen, he's usually such a planner. We all had fun laughing about it though.
Maybe we were distracted by the sunset on our way.
We stopped at Bass Pro Shop so we could get Kara a warmer coat and boots. She refuses to stop outgrowing everything! I'd never been there before, and the kids loved looking around. We spent a lot longer there than planned.

Kiersten ended up getting new boots as well. Kara skipped the shoe size Kiersten is in now, so not a lot of hand me downs for her currently.

They tried some archery while we waited in line for Santa.

They wouldn't do a group picture, because they all wanted to make sure they got to speak with the big guy.
Ben wanted to drive through a light display that his client told him about. We saw the huge line of cars, but could also see the park, so figured we'd be in before too long. After 2 hours of barely moving a little at a time, we finally made it to the actual display and drove through in less than 10 minutes. There were a few sporadic lights displayed along the long drive into the park, but they were pretty far apart, and the same waving elf was repeated at least 7 times, so the kids got sick of seeing him.
The excitement in the car when we would see the occasional light display was kind of funny, though. It was nice to finally have something to look at besides trees in the dark.
Once we were actually into the light display, there were so many things crammed so close together they were a bit hard to even look at. I can't imagine why they don't have them spread down the rest of the drive so you're not driving for hours looking at nothing. Maybe we just went on the worst possible night, Saturday evening before Christmas.

The girls were so tired of being in the car and grumpy, that it took them a minute to even care about the lights, but they couldn't help getting excited after a few fun ones.

For whatever reason, I was laughing hysterically at these soldiers getting knocked down by a cannon ball. It still almost makes me laugh just seeing the picture again.

We were too late to try to go to dinner where we had planned, so we hit up Minsky's and then headed to the hotel. The girls were excited to be downtown instead of over in Blue Springs.

At the game the next day, we did not tailgate because it was so cold. I was ready for the girls to be miserable, but they were in great spirits and had a fun time.

They were thrilled to see that Kara's soda froze inside her cup. Evie's lemonade did not freeze, not matter how long she left it alone to get that result.
I was glad they all wore snow pants and as many layers as possible. Kara's new coat worked great.
They couldn't eat popcorn with their snow gloves, so Ben would just shove it in their faces for them, and whatever made it in, they ate. The rest ended up all over the ground.
We had to stop at the store after the game, and while I was in the restroom, Ben let the girls buy silly headbands.

We got home and woke the girls up to open their Christmas Eve jammies.

They were tired-excited, which always makes for a good time.

After we watched our traditional Muppets Christmas Carol, we let Evie watch Gremlins with us for her first time. She was okay with it and laughed more than she hid her face, unlike Kiersten. Then they set out cookies and milk for Santa and headed off to dream of sugar plums.
